Stat 200 Final Exam: Part I
(To be done using Coursetalk)
Instructions:
Twelve problems are given below. Each one
has a description of a situation in which a statistical inference is to be
carried out. You are to do the following in each problem:
- Discuss
each problem with members of your fishbowl, through postings in Coursetalk.
20% of your grade will be based on your participation.
- On
the basis of your postings/discussion, identify the statistical test/technique
that should be used in the problem. 40% of your grade will be based on whether
your answer is correct or not.
- Explain why you chose the statistical test/technique. This
should reflect your discussion on Coursetalk. 40% of your grade will be based
on the quality of your explanation.
- Submit
your answers (choice of statistical test/technique) numbered 1 to 12, with
a brief explanation of why you chose the answer. No answers are to be submitted
via Coursetalk--only discussion occurs there. This should be typed and submitted
to me not later than 5:00 PM Friday, April 28.
Your explanations
should involve the following ideas/concepts/issues:
- What type of variables occur in the problem: categorical
or numerical?
- What are the response and explanatory variables (if any)?
- Are comparisons being asked
for? How many groups are to be compared?
- Which
measure of ‘center or location’ is being used: mean or median?
- Is
the problem concerned about a relationship between two variables with both
numerical? Or are both variables categorical?
- Other things we have talked
about this semester?
Examples of statistical
tests/techniques that you should think about (choose from) are inferences about
one mean, two means, three or more means, tests about medians, proportions etc.
